Estrogen Replacement Therapy in Turner Syndrome
April 4, 2023 8:00PM EDT In this presentation Dr. Alexandrou will inform patients about the underlying prevalence of primary ovarian failure, importance of estrogen supplementation on overall health, treatments that are available to them, timing of interventions, and what to expect with treatment including its long-term benefits. I will start by discussing primary ovarian failure and prevalence in girls with Turner syndrome. I will review the available treatments, timing of therapy introduction and escalation of doses, as well as goals of treatment and benefits. Patients, caregivers, allied health professionals, clinical researchers, health administrators, and policy makers. About the Presenter:
Undergraduate education in Biochemistry at University of Notre Dame, followed by medical school at Indiana University, Pediatric residency at Medical College of Georgia, and Pediatric endocrine fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s hospital. Dr. Alexandrou is the Clinical Assistant Professor in Pediatric Endocrinology/Diabetes at University of Iowa. She joined the faculty in August 2020. During her fellowship she grew a great interest and commitment to caring for girls and women with Turner syndrome. She had the privilege of caring for many individuals with Turner syndrome throughout my fellowship, and pursued research projects regarding quality improvement in how we deliver care to these individuals. One of my projects entailed introduction of an anxiety screening tool in our endocrine clinic to more proactively detect symptoms of anxiety and prompt timely referrals as well as set the groundwork for productive discussions. Currently, at University of Iowa, I am working with my colleagues to start an interdisciplinary TS Center.
